What’s Your Auto-Suggestion?

I don’t know about all of you, but I tend to start every year with enthusiastic abandon, ready to take on the world. Then every year, a few weeks go by, and I begin to feel the first creeping sensation of panic – It’s almost mid-January! What have I accomplished!?

A good friend just sent me a book excerpt that I thought was such a perfect little reminder…that success, change, and opportunity don’t happen overnight. To keep myself in check, I’m going to post one tweet every day this month – my own daily “auto-suggestion,” which I’ll define for now as a positive intention-based thought. It could be something I’m hopeful for, excited about, or even just sending good vibes toward. Feel free to send me yours on Twitter as well, I look forward to reading them.

And now for the excerpt, which I thought I should share as we all continue moving forward into our work, social obligations, and chaos of the year:

A Toast for the New Year

The law of autosuggestion

if you think you are beaten, you are,
if you think you dare not, you don’t.
if you like to win, but you think you cant,
it is almost certain you won’t.
if you think you’ll lose, you’re lost,
for out in the world we find,
success begins with a fellow’s will-
it’s all in the state of mind.
if you think you are outclassed, you are,
you’ve got to think high to rise,
you’ve got to be sure of yourself before
you can ever win a prize.
life’s battles don’t always go
to the stronger or faster man,

but sooner or later the man who wins
is the man who thinks he can.

Thanks Bradshaw. Jim, I agree – it is all a state of mind. I think that “doing” and seeing actual results are two different things, though. We can all be busy and cross things off our lists and make strides in our work, but it’s tough to stay in it for the long haul when we don’t see immediate results.

My favorite part of the quote is:
    life’s battles don’t always go
to the stronger or faster man,
but soon or later the man who wins
is the man who thinks he can.

All good things just take time (and thought! and action!)

If it is all a state of mind, then you know why you haven’t accomplished anything so far this year. It is because you are thinking too much and not doing enough. In fact, don’t think just act. Deal with the consequences later, because you know you can handle whatever is thrown your way.

  6. well… nice post! and really nice excerpt! it’s a way of thinking I use in my everyday life. and remember, to reach ur objectives, that life is just a matter of chances: it’s up to u to take advantage of them….

  7. I also approach life from a positive perspective. Sure there are times you get kicked in the teeth, but the good points in life usually far out-weigh the bad. Make others laugh, smile and feel better about their day even for the briefest of moments and you’ve earned your keep for the day.
